Christoph Gaertner Sells a Few Nice Jubilee items

Royal Navy Exhibition card uprated with 1/2d JubileeChristoph Gaertner’s usual phonebook-sized auction catalogue for their 21st-24th January 2013 sale managed to feature a few interesting Jubilee items among the 25’000+ (!!!) lots on offer. As is understandable, some are well overpriced, some are nicely priced, and it’s rare to find anything estimated low.

However my pick of their auction was lot 7804, pictured above. It is a souvenir card from the Royal Naval Exhibition on the 15th August 1891. Not only is it very attractive, but it is hard to find these cards uprated for postage abroad. I’m slightly regretting not being the winning bidder at €93 plus 20% commission.

??????????

As destination mail for the Jubilee issue goes, St. Pierre and Miquelon has to be up there with the rarest (it had a population of roughly 6’000 at the time…and it still does now!), and is so far the only one I have recorded. Although lot 7806 has some soiling and the indistinct arrival cds, I can’t help but feel that at only €60 it shouldn’t have gone unsold.

1/2d Jubilee Destination Mail to AlgeriaAnd just as a comparison, lot 7803 was a postcard sent to Algeria fetched €65 plus 20% commission. Although still pretty  scarce as a destination (with it being a French colony, as St. Pierre et Miquelon, there was very little commercial mail coming from the UK), I have seen a few. Algeria’s population was roughly 4’000’000. Obviously it is helped by the its freshness and crisp arrival.

Cavendish Sell Rare British Levant

British Levant 40pa on 2 1-2d Double OverprintCavendish’s auction on 5th December 2012 saw a nice collection of British Levant go up for sale, including a few nice Jubilee pieces. Of note were three mint and one used example of the “40 PARAS” double overprint on the 2 1/2d. Lot 221 (pictured) with a 1964 RPS certificate sold for £750 plus commission. Also of note was a strip of five of the 40pa provisional overprint on the 1/2d vermilion. Observant readers would have noticed that a different strip of five in perfect unmounted mint condition was hammered down at £9’000 plus commission. Lot 226 was a mounted mint strip, which has a good deal of separation on the right hand stamp, sold for £1’400 plus commission. Emphasising the importance of collecting top quality stamps! These two are the largest know multiples.British Levant 40pa on 1-2d vermilion strip of five

Corbitts Sell Another Rare Office of Works Block

On November 29th 2012 Corbitts will sell another rare Office of Works marginal block of four. Lot 1646 is a block of the 10d Jubilee estimated at £7’000-10’000. In their previous auction, Corbitts sold a marginal block of four of the 5d Jubilee for £12’600 plus commission. Although it has a faint vertical crease, it is hinged on one stamp and has a clear 1945 RPS certificate. So expect this block to go for more!

Corbitts will also have many other Jubilee official including a 1s green & carmine Board of Education, as well as blocks, varieties and specimens of Army and I. R. Officials.

Cherrystone Offer Jubilee / Zemstvo Mixed Frankings!

Cherrystone have for auction the Nikitin collection of Zemstvos for sale on November 28th 2012. To my shock, there are two covers with Jubilee frankings! Lots 2017 and 2020 were both sent from England to Russia, and were affixed with a Zemstvo to pay for the local delivery.

Official Overprints Sell Well At David Feldman

The September 19th-24th auction series of David Feldman saw some astonishing prices throughout the sale, none more so than in their section of GB. The star of the show undoubtedly being the cover with the block of four 1d red with “Treasury Roulette” experimental perforation selling for €50’000+20%. However I was more interested in these humble Jubilee pieces.

Warwick & Warwick Sell 2d Colour Trials Group

Warwick and Warwick held the Commander Simpson collection of Great Britain at their offices in Warwick on October 3rd 2012. The highlight (for me obviously) was lot 1066, a group of five attractive 2d colour trials which sold for £1’955 (incl. commission). Only one had some minor faults.

Corbitts Sell Rare Office of Works Block

Argyll Etkin Sell Strong Selection of Bechuanaland and Mafeking

Argyll Etkin’s recent sale on 4th May featured (again) a strong section of South Africa, and even had some rare Mafeking covers which very infrequently appear at auction.

The best Jubilee item was a pair of the Mafeking 1s on 4d green and brown on cover to Bulawayo. Estimated at £1’200-1’500, it sold for £2’200 plus 17% commission.

However the one that I had spotted for my collection was the 1d on 1/2d vermilion cover estimated the same. Sadly I was outbid at £1’700 plus 17% commission. Although I did pick up a nice Bechuanaland cover which helped to take the bitter taste of defeat away

Grosvenor sell Mullett collection of British Islands

Grosvenor appeared to have a successful sale Jim Mullett collection of British Offshore Islands on 26th April 2012.

My highlight was a postcard sent by the infamous W. R. Bray, who was famous for testing the Post Office regulations to the limit for sending letters, cards, bicycles, etc. through the post. It was sent from London with the message that the card be forwarded around the British islands as fast as possible, and sent via Lundy, Beaumaris, Holy Island and Sandwich. Estimated at £100-150, the estimate was thrashed and fetched £550 plus commission!

Corinphila Sell “Severin” UPU Collection

April proved to be a busy time for philatelic auction companies. One of the more interesting and unusual sales was at Corinphila in Zurich on April 24th-26th, where they sold the “Severin” collection of UPU. The highlight (for me at least) was this beautiful Reply Paid Letter hand-painted essay. Estimated at a meagre 1’000SFr, I bid it up to 4’200Sfr before dropping out (likely beaten by Stanley Gibbons but we’ll see…). At this price it was still below what it’s really worth.

Also of note in their main sale was a cover sent to Tunisia and franked with postage dues on arrival which fetched 240Sfr plus commission. Its irregular shape likely putting more bidders (like myself) off. As well as a 1s green and carmine on cover with sold for 400Sfr plus commision. This being the 59th that I have recorded.
