At the start of the postal service on 9th August 1888, the rates were:

When posted within the limits of the Protectorate…

Letters per 1/2oz Newspapers per 4oz
and addressed to places within the limits of the Protectorate 2d 2d
and addressed to Offices in Matabeleland, British Bechuanaland, the Cape Colony, and other parts of South Africa 4d 4d
and addressed to the UK and foreign countries (in addition to the rate specified in the convention between the Cape Colony and British Bechuanaland) 2d 2 1/2d

 

When posted beyond the limits of the Protectorate…

Letters per 1/2oz Newspapers per 4oz
and addressed to places within the Trans-Protectorate 2d 2d
and addressed to Offices within the limits of the Protectorate 4d 2 1/2d
and addressed to Offices in British Bechuanaland, the Cape Colony, and other parts of South Africa 6d 4 1/2d
and addressed to the UK and foreign countries (in addition to the rate specified in the convention between the Cape Colony and British Bechuanaland) 4d 4d

 

Correspondence addressed to the Protectorate or Trans-Protectorate were paid at the rates in the convention between the Cape Colony and British Bechuanaland with the additional charges

Letters per 1/2oz Newspapers per 4oz
when delivered within the limits of the Protectorate 2d 1d
when delivered beyond the limits of the Protectorate 4d 2d

 

1st October 1888 (?)
The rate to the UK was reduced from 10d to 8d per 1/2oz.

1st August 1892
Letters 4d per 1/2oz.
Additional charge of 2d on incoming UK and Foreign letters ceased.

18th November 1892, the rates were as follows:
Letters to the UK: 6d per 1/2oz (since May 1892)
Letters to foreign countries: 6 1/2d per 1/2oz
Postcards within the Protectorate: 1d
Postcards to South Africa Postal Union: 1 1/2d
Postcards to UK: 2d
Postcards to foreign countries: 2 1/2d

1st April 1899
Letter rate reduced to 4d per 1/2oz.

1st March 1901
U.P.U. rates applicable.

1st April 1903
Letters to Cape Colony reduced to 1d per 1/2oz.
Postcards to Cape Colony reduced to 1/2d.
