<< Back to 4½ Green & Red

Ten handpainted essays were presented on 1st February 1892, each on a separate dated piece of paper lettered A to J. Those from the De La Rue archive are defaced with a pen cross, but those from official sources are undefaced. Five were intended to have green headplates and five purple, usually described as lilac.

In the event, design F, the issued stamp, was chosen on 20th February.
