William Brown was locally famous as a publisher and bookseller, but philately was also amongst his interests. He was a leading light in the Salisbury Philatelic Society. Latterly a stamp dealer, he was the author of “The Stamps of the Straits Settlements: Surcharged for use in the Native Protected States” (pictured), published by himself at St. Thomas’ Square in 1894, where he also published “The Philatelic Journal” (see examples of his advertising covers for this publication below).
